RE: Adding a Slideout to an Older Motorhome

Although the cost isn't cheap, the satisfaction may justify it. I have an older MH which I am comfortable and confident about. It wouldn't be a major decision to spend it's entire value on it because I intend to keep it quite a while longer. As an avid do-it-yourselfer it is satisfying to know where all the parts are and how to replace or fix them. If you fit that category too, then you may be considering a worth-while project.

Wow, never would have guessed that this would be a hot topic! I don't log on very frequently and it is usually to search for experiences, tips, how-tos, information sharing, etc. I have learned a lot from honest folks who caringly share what they have done in many areas of our RVing life. There are a lot of good Do-It-Yourselfers here who are not out to do accomplish anything but share what they know and learn more. That makes for a better RVing experience for all of us. These forums are a valuable resource. "Thank You" to those who provide and maintain them.

Welcome to the wonderful world of RVing! From what you have said it seems that you have found a great way to get started. And, you have a real resource available--the original owner, your Grandad. Don't get discouraged when little troubles crop up, they do for all of us regardless of the age of the motorhome. After all we are driving our little house down the road. And it is a great enjoyment, troubles and all.

Welcome to the forum! Not sure how true this is today but Remco used to be really great with their advice and help. The few folks that I have chatted with who have had a problem pretty much have found that a lack of attention to detail when doing the installation was the real culprit. If a bad one did come off the line then obviously Remco and the installer have an obligation to take care of it.
The driveshaft disconnect isn't rocket science, I even did mine myself. So, it shouldn't be too difficult for a real mechanic to understand your situation. Don't get discouraged. Just insist on the satisfaction that you have paid for.

You have my vote to do away with the buddy list since it really is just a "blocking" list. Most of us are here to aid and assist each other. It is easy to find the few who abuse this excellent forum resource. They troll every topic posting their self-esteemed opinion on anything and everything many times every day. If they ever had an RV they certainly are not using it any more. There is no way someone can make ten or more posts per day for years and ever be on the road enjoying the country.
Our membership levels are based on the number of posts. We ought to have a level that when reached (maybe a couple of thousand?), the member is automatically banned. At that level it would be obvious that he is not an RVer any more.

Bluebird Wanderlodge Update

Just read in the local paper that Bluebird Coachworks, now owned by Complete Coachworks but keeping the Bluebird name, will begin road-testing its first coach next week. They have not produced a unit in about two years. If you are passing through middle Georgia you might get a glimpse of it. The plant is in Fort Valley, GA.

We bought a used Holiday Rambler several years ago. It was about ten years old at the time, too. It has been a good RV for us. After looking at it three times and taking it for a drive once, we made the owner an offer about ten percent below the asking price. After getting his false teeth back in he promised to think about it and call back. In a couple of hours he did call and accepted the offer. Obviously I and the others here can't comment on your particular MH and the price but if it is the one you want, don't be afraid to make an offer and wait. You can always increase the offer later if need be. Good luck!

moisheh and Craig P., thank you for the comments. I've not yet verified this, but the rumor now is that Remco may cease doing business. That would be a sad shame because their driveshaft disconnect fills a real need.

I have read this entire thread with keen interest and appreciation since I too, am a P30 owner and do-it-yourselfer. You guys are a real credit to the forum. Forgive my personal intrusion here. It is likely that you misunderstand my post. There are still a few of us old codgers around who enjoy doing their own mechanical work and prefer to not have other people messing with their vehicles. Please note that I admire the product and have used it for years with excellent results. I did not know of the changing conditions with Remco until I was ready to buy another product. Because there are other satisfied and probably unknowing disconnect users on the forum, I simply wanted to spread the word that, "It ain't like it used to be, guys".
My apology to you for ruffling your feathers. It was kind of obvious when you began with, "One more time..." Your tone indicates that you may well be in a class where you have never needed to do-it-yourself or do without. I don't need to either, now. But, I remember what it was like - and I enjoy being able to still do my own work.
I will be happy to agree to disagree with you. Let's just keep it out of the public forum. Folks go there for information and to help each other. Let's do our part to keep it that way.

RE: Hydroboost brakes

The hydroboost feels different from a vacuum-assisted system since it uses pressure in the power steering unit to apply pressure to another system - the brakes. And obviously both have to be working good to have good braking. I can feel an increase in required steering input while pressing the brake pedal when stopped. When the RV is in motion though, I do not feel it.
After working on mine I take it to a large open dirt lot and at about 15 mph press the brake hard enough to lock the wheels then check the skid marks. They should all be about the same length.

At the time I installed my drive shaft disconnect, Remco offered an exchange plan whereby they would either modify your current disconnect or give a trade-in value toward the purchase of another unit. It is written in the paper work that came with the hardware and was noted on their web site. The way I found out that this is no longer the case was when I called Remco to buy a drive shaft disconnect for a new toad vehicle. The Remco phone rep stated, "We no longer offer the exchange program. It was a good deal for owners but we have discontinued it." Please note the quote marks.
An even bigger shock to me was that they no longer sell direct to the do-it-yourselfers. As long as the good Lord gives me the health and presence of mind, I love doing my own work.
The nearest Remco authorized dealer is over one hundred miles away and he sells only what he is allowed to install.
It is understandable that this isn't a big deal to folks who hire their work done. I made the original post to pass on what I have learned to anyone who might benefit from it. Dear friend, it IS my personal experience.

I also extend the jacks in storage. Have done so for about seven years without a problem. Like wa8yxm I spray and wipe the pistons once in a while.

Bio-D, When the automatic transmission is placed in Neutral it is disconnected from the engine but not from the differential. When the vehicle is towed, the wheels deliver rotation through the differential back into parts of the transmission. Most transmissions require engine input to drive its oil pump and provide lubrication. But, while being towed the engine is off so parts of the transmission would be made to spin without benefit of oil.
If there are automatics on which this is not the case, you can bet that someone in this forum will let us know.

Did my own install of the Remco disconnect several years ago on a Toyota pickup and towed it all over the US, Canada and to Alaska with no problems. It does require cleaning and occassional adjusting. The only problem now is that Remco is no longer customer-centric. You can find my post in this forum about "Remco disconnects from its customers". But that does not detract from the fact that their driveshaft disconnect is a fine item. Don't know what us DIY types will do now.

Bio-D, Sorry about the bad news here but they are right. I have an '85 Toyota pickup, too. I used the Remco driveshaft disconnect, installed it myself. The job isn't for the non-mechanic but it doesn't require a pro, either. If you can do the usual brake pad replacement and repacking wheel bearings then you are at the right level of capability.
